Why does diesel cost more than unleaded?

Diesel was originally less than unleaded due to it’s lower cost to produce, it is one of the first products to come off during the refining process. So less manufacturing should mean less overall cost right?
The problem we have today is that the overwhelming majority of people who the government takes care of are the standard unleaded driving consumers. They complained about gas prices so the government mandated new ways to reduce the cost at the pump. One of these ways is ethanol. According to some recent radio ads ethanol “brings down the price at the pump.” So it’s not really that diesel is more than unleaded but that unleaded has become diluted and therefore less expensive than diesel.
